Mr Morrison also grouped himself among those who remained loyal to Mr Turnbull but threw his hat in the ring when the leadership was vacated.

One minister was so disillusioned with the push to oust Turnbull that he took to Twitter to apologize to the Australian people.

Turnbull wanted a plan to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to be enshrined in law as part of Australia's agreement at the United Nations climate conference held in Paris in December 2015.

Turnbull survived one attempt to knife him on Tuesday, winning a party room vote 48-35, but since then ministers had been defecting. It's also an global embarrassment for a nation that prides itself as a safe and stable democracy in which to invest.

His government was also upended by a weird citizenship crisis that ruled 15 lawmakers ineligible for office for holding dual nationalities and it has trailed the opposition Labor party for 37 consecutive fortnightly opinion polls.
