J.J. Abrams has been building out his cast for Star Wars: Episode IX over the past months, and with the production having begun principal photography earlier this month, there are likely to be a few more casting announcements to come.

Best known as Merry the Hobbit in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films, Monaghan previously worked with Episode IX director J.J. Abrams on the TV show Lost, which Abrams produced.

Deadline's report doesn't have the details of what he'll be playing, but according to the man himself, it's the realisation of a long-held dream.

Star Wars: Episode IX opens December 20, 2019 and also stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Billy Dee Williams, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Carrie Fisher. Back in 2014, he publicly expressed his desire to hook back up with Abrams in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. On Friday, Abrams added another former-collaborator to the still-untitled Star Wars movie: Lost star Dominic Monaghan, who knows a thing or two (or three, actually) about movie franchises. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio (Argo, Justice League).

The cast for Star Wars: Episode IX continues to expand. It's now filming in the United Kingdom with plans for a December 2019 release.
