Kevin Spacey film Billionaire Boys Club makes just £98 on opening day

"Billionaire Boys Club" was one of the last movies Spacey filmed before he was hit with sexual misconduct allegations in 2017. Factoring in the average ticket price in the United States, an estimate of only six people showed up in each cinema over the weekend to see the film.

The claim against the American Beauty actor came not long after Hollywood was turned-upside-down by the sexual assault allegations brought against Harvey Weinstein which are claimed to go back decades.

It was first released last month on Amazon Prime Video, DVD and other on-demand platforms, with distributor Vertical Entertainment explaining they chose to share the film despite the allegations against Spacey.

So far, more than a dozen men have come forward and claimed that Spacey committed some sort of sexual crime or misconduct against them, with some of them alleging the acts happened when they were minors. "Billionaire Boys Club" also stars Ansel Elgort and Taron Egerton and Vertical Entertainment finally pulled the trigger on a limited theatre release on Friday, Aug. 17.

The Hollywood Reporter described the film's cinema debut as a "career low at the box office" for the Oscar-winning performer.

Spacey, 59, was sacked from the Netflix series House of Cards a year ago when allegations emerged.

Spacey plays Beverly Hills high roller Ron Levin, which is not a starring role.

Vertical Entertainment, the studio behind Billionaire Boys Club, released a statement in June, regarding their decision to release the movie despite Spacey's involvement.

It said Spacey's behaviour was not publicly known at the time of filming and that he has "a small, supporting role". This certainly seemed to be the case when Ridley Scott reshot All the Money in the World at great expense to remove Spacey and replace him with Christopher Plummer. That makes "Billionaire Boys Club", of which he has a supporting role, Spacey's first foray into the public life since the allegations. Eventually, Vertical Entertainment chose to release it video on demand (VOD) and then in a limited theatrical run, saying it was "neither an easy nor insensitive decision".
