Damon Lindelof’s Pilot Picked Up To Series By HBO

HBO programming president Casey Bloys hinted at a likely series pickup for the Watchmen pilot, written by Lindelof and directed by Nicole Kassell, at TCA last month.

It's finally official: HBO is bringing the Watchmen TV series to life.

The series is based on the DC graphic novel from Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. Stephen Williams will also direct and executive produce, with Joseph Iberti and Tom Spezialy also executive producing.

In Nobody Asked for This News, there's a Watchmen series headed your way in 2019. (Hap and Leonard), Tim Blake Nelson (Colossal), Adelaide Clemens (Rectify), Andrew Howard (Bates Motel), Frances Fisher (Masters of Sex), Jacob Ming-Trent (White Famous), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (The Handmaid's Tale), Sara Vickers (The Crown), and Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow).

It is set in an alternate history where "superheroes" are treated as outlaws.

But if you're one of the many folks out there who either loved or hated the film from Zack Snyder, fret not - this will not be a retread of that story, at least not from what we've heard about the film.

We still know very little about the series, despite extensive coverage of its development and a fandom that remains divided over the news that it's happening at all (Moore has, for years, resisted all attempts to further the Watchmen story due to a years-old dispute over the rights with DC Comics).

The show comes from Damon Lindelof, the man behind Lost and The Leftovers so that's already a good sign.

"Some of the characters will be unknown", Lindelof previously said of the upcoming series, per Variety. "We also intend to revisit the past century of Costumed Adventuring through a surprising yet familiar set of eyes.and it is here we will be taking our greatest risks".
