Dozens Hospitalized In Mass Overdose At Connecticut Park

At least 71 people have overdosed from synthetic marijuana in CT with at least 52 of them at or near a CT city park, authorities said late Wednesday.

The first overdoses were reported near Yale University on Tuesday night.

Police believe all the overdoses are from K-2, also known as synthetic marijuana.

The number of overdose victims linked to a suspected bad batch of synthetic marijuana has risen to 76 in New Haven, Conn., as officials try to determine exactly what sickened people.

Lt. Ernest Jones, an emergency medical technician for the New Haven Fire Department, told the Register he's had his job for five years, and never had such an abnormal day at work.

A suspect is in custody after over 40 individuals overdosed in a CT park on a drug suspected of being laced with an opioid, police say. The police chief says they firmly believe the person in custody is responsible for at least some of the overdoses.

No deaths were reported but police said at least two people suffered life-threatening symptoms after consuming the synthetic drug.

The state Senate Republican leader, Len Fasano, of North Haven, criticized New Haven officials on Thursday for not addressing drug use on the Green.

Hawk said the people who tested positive may have taken other drugs laced with fentanyl in addition to the synthetic marijuana, which is plant material sprayed with drugs and chemicals.

New Haven fire chief John Alston said responders received calls just after 8 a.m. reporting multiple individuals experiencing overdose symptoms, including unconsciousness, vomiting and nausea.

"We literally had people running around the Green providing treatment", said Rick Fontana, the city's emergency operations director, according to The Associated Press. By late Wednesday night there had been no deaths reported.

Authorities said most of the New Haven patients responded to high doses of Narcan given at the hospital and they were released.

"We heard from people on the green this morning that it potentially included PCP".

Naloxone, an antidote for narcotic overdoses, was administered to some victims but didn't appear to be effective. "Let's address it that way", he said.

The alert also reminds people of the symptoms of overdoses: The person won't wake up; has blue lips or fingernails; has clammy, cool skin; shallow, slow breathing or is suffering from seizures, the EMS office said.

CT police have made multiple arrests in connection with 76 overdose cases at a New Haven park.

More than a dozen people overdosed on synthetic marijuana at the same park July 4.
