Bin Laden raid commander to Trump: revoke my security clearance too

Former CIA director John Brennan arrives at a May 2018 Senate hearing.

Brennan described the decision to revoke his clearance as "politically motivated" and "an attempt to scare into silence others who might dare to challenge him".

Former CIA Director John Brennan said on Thursday he would not be silenced by Donald Trump, a day after the US president revoked the Obama-era official's security clearance and said the move was directly tied to the ongoing Russian Federation investigation. Democratic lawmakers blasted the president's move as risky.

Other Republicans were more charitable.

But before the day was over, Trump had admitted what everyone already knew: that this was all about Brennan's piercing criticism and his role in launching the investigation into his campaign's possible involvement with the Russians in the 2016 election.

"He's acted like a political hack, and not a national security professional", Kennedy said.

Adm. William McRaven said in an open letter to Mr. Trumppublished first by the Washington Post that he was demanding the revocation as an act of solidarity with former CIA Director John Brennan, who had his clearance stripped Wednesday.

On Thursday's episode of CNN's the Lead, anchor Jake Tapper observed that despite President Donald Trump's antipathy toward what he calls a "rigged witch hunt", the president is inadvertently aiding the Russian Federation probe. "And these people led it!"

Trump said that's why he wanted to strip Brennan of his security clearance.

"I think that it is wrong in America, the United States of America, to say as a retired general or admiral to come out in a public position supporting one candidate or another", Mattis said during a speech in South America this week.

There was no suggestion that Brennan has leaked classified information.

When the White House made the Brennan announcement Wednesday, it also said it was looking at the clearances of nine other former Obama administration national-security officials, Adm. McRaven not among them.

High-ranking government officials sometimes retain security clearances after leaving office to advise their successors as needed, and some private sector companies can also require them.

Brennan, who was head of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2013 to 2017, also raised the occasion in July 2016 wen Trump called on the Russians to find the missing emails of his Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.
