Ontario allowing pot sales in private retail stores April 1

Canadian cannabis rights activist Marc Emery made those comments after the news broke that Ontario residents will be able to buy pot online immediately when the drug becomes legal on October 17, but will have to wait until April 2019 to legally buy it in a retail store.

"The 500 stores that the Ford government is promising in the private sector is a lot better than the 40 government stores that the Liberals were promising", says Emery.

Fedeli said private retailers will have to follow a series of rules including prohibiting the sale of marijuana to anyone under the age of 19. Anyone caught violating the rules will face "severely escalating fines", he said.

The online sales will be operated by a government agency called the Ontario Cannabis Store.

Unlike the LCBO, the Beer Store and grocery stores that sell alcohol with no limit on the amount you can buy, the government will be restricting cannabis users from buying as much as they'd like.

The province will run the online business but will not operate the physical stores.

Democrats' hopes to take House could stumble in Minnesota
Democrats need to pick up 23 seats in November to retake the House, but it'll be hard if they lose districts they now hold. Corry Bliss of the Conservative Leadership Fund says Minnesota is "Ground Zero" for control of the House.

"As part of this process the government will begin consultations with municipalities, Indigenous communities, law enforcement, public health advocates, businesses and consumer groups and representatives of the other provinces with private retail to ensure that Ontario's private retail model remains safe while helping to eliminate the illegal market".

Ontario-based Newstrike Brands Ltd., parent company of licensed cannabis producer Up Cannabis Inc., likewise welcomed the move.

Municipalities will also have a one-time window where they can opt out of allowing private marijuana stores in their municipalities.

The previous Liberal government had planned to give the Liquor Control Board of Ontario a monopoly on the sale of recreational cannabis.

Don't miss out on the latest news and information. "We're all going to be buying [marijuana] from the black market and all of the people who we've been buying it from while it has been illegal for possibly six months to a year".

Bottomley added that "should producers be included in the process, we believe this could result in higher margins over the long term through a more vertically integrated business model".
