Hurricane John absorbs tropical storm off Mexico

Tropical Storm Ileana was trailing John to the southeast but wasn't forecast to reach hurricane force.

Hawaii emergency officials who have been contending with Kilauea volcano's lava flow were preparing for a hurricane that was expected to pass to the south of the islands this week.

The storm is centered about 1,160 miles west of the Azores and is moving north near 16 mph.

According to the National Hurricane Center, "small but powerful" Hector continues to churn away in the eastern Pacific as a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour.

A trough is then forecast to take Debby on a northeasterly track afterward, but fall apart afterward.
