‘Stateless’ Thai Cave Boys and Coach Granted Citizenship

The story of the "Wild Boars" club has dominated headlines since the 12 boys and their 25-year-old coach went exploring in Tham Luang cave on June 23 and were trapped deep inside by rising floodwaters, setting off an worldwide search dubbed "Mission Impossible". An global effort to rescue them ended on July 10 when they all were brought out safely.

Local authorities approved their applications after checking their qualifications, including birth certificates.

Adul Sam-on, Mongkol Boonpiam, Pornchai Kamluang and Ekkapol Chantawong officially became Thai citizens when they, along with 26 other people, took part in a ceremony held at Mae Sai district office yesterday afternoon to present them with Thai ID cards.

The footballers and the coach were among the 13 people who were trapped in the cave for nine days until their dramatic rescue.

According to Thai government statistics, there are 488,105 stateless people registered in Thailand, but that number could be as high as 3.5 million, according to the International Observatory on Statelessness.
