Space Force: Trump 2020 asks supporters to vote on logo

The Trump administration plans to establish a Department of the Space Force - a sixth independent branch of the US military - by 2020, Vice President Mike Pence announced on Thursday. Then, on Thursday afternoon, the Trump/Pence team sent out an email asking for readers to vote on one of six proposed logos for Space Force that will be used on a "new line of gear". The last time the US created a new uniformed military service was in 1947, when the Air Force was launched after World War II.

"The time has come to establish the United States Space Force".

Space Force received a bipartisan endorsement Thursday from Rep. Mike Rogers, Repiblican from Alabama., and Rep. Jim Cooper, Democrat from Tennessee.

First, the report calls for the creation of the U.S. Space Command, a new unified combatant command for space. One person who runs a Twitter as God, wrote, "I already have a Space Force".

He also said Russian Federation and China were developing weapons, such as hypersonic missiles, to launch attacks from space here on Earth.

USA intelligence agencies reported earlier this year that Russian Federation and China were pursuing "nondestructive and destructive" anti-satellite weapons for use during a future war.

On Thursday Mattis appeared to change his tune, and said space was "becoming a contested war-fighting domain and we have got to adapt to that reality".

When Donald Trump started talking about creating a Space Force at his rallies, the "pro-Trumpers" yelled their approval.

"Our adversaries have transformed space into a warfighting domain already and the United States will not shrink from this challenge", Pence added.

In June, President Donald Trump called for the establishment of the sixth armed service, to join the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard.

"There is a threat out there but it's being handled by the U.S. Air Force today". "It didn't seem like it made sense".

"It is an area where we should continue focus on", he added, pointing in particular to China. It also oversees Air Force cyberwarfare.

The top House Republican and Democrat on an Armed Services Committee panel on strategic forces applauded the plan.

In the meantime, White House officials have been working with national security leaders to aggressively move ahead without Congress.

For a while the Pentagon, with the military still at war, tried to keep it from happening - too many other pressing issues to deal with, they argued.

Secretary of Defense James Mattis had also disapproved of the idea in the past, saying a year ago he opposed creating additional bureaucracy at the Pentagon.
