'Superman' star Margot Kidder died from 'self-inflicted drug and alcohol overdose'

The cause of death is unknown.

Kidder, who played Lois Lane in the '70s and '80s "Superman" movies, was found May 13 in her Livingston, MT home.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Kidder's daughter Maggie McGuane said the family decided to make her mother's suicide public because "it's important to be open and honest about the suicide so there's no cloud of shame". The coroner said no additional details would be released.

Her daughter Maggie McGuane said on Wednesday that it was a "big relief" to have the truth out.

Kidder was working until just prior to her death.

Margot Kidder, best known for playing Lois Lane in the Superman films in the 1970s and 1980s, died on Sunday, May 13 at the age of 69. She had been struggling with bipolar disorder for years. She still helps lost animals and other causes that she's passionate about. The coroner did not specify which drugs she took, TMZ reported. In 2007, she revealed she had not suffered a manic episode in 11 years and credited orthomolecular medicine.

In what was an obvious reference to the Superman movies, Kidder made a cameo in Smallville along with the series' stars Michael Rosenbaum and Allison Mack.

"The truth is he was kind of an a--e", Kidder said before adding they had a brother-sister relationship and bickered a lot.

Regarding her family life, Kidder got married three different times throughout her life and has one daughter, Maggie McGuane. But on a trip to NY she caught the acting bug, and after school she moved to Los Angeles to try her luck. Her third marriage was to French film director Philippe de Broca which lasted from 1983 to 1984.
