New NCAA Basketball Rule Allows Players To Return To School If Undrafted

Among the changes is the reversal of a rule that has long separated amateur from pro athletes.

College basketball players who participate in the NBA combine and go undrafted will be allowed to return to school and play as part of sweeping NCAA reforms in the wake of a corruption scandal. We will continue to work in all of these areas and continue to pursue collaboration with outside organizations, including the NBA, the National Basketball Players Association, apparel companies and USA Basketball.

In addition, agents certified by the NCAA would be able pay for meals and certain other expenses. "Agents aren't gonna run around and sign guys and spend money for players that they don't think are gonna make it". Previously, players could declare for the draft, and attend the NBA Scouting Combine, but had to withdraw their name from the draft no more than 10 days after the combine to retain eligibility. "Elite" players that go undrafted must notify their athletic director about returning to school by 5 p.m. Monday following the draft.

Student-athletes can now take up to 15 official visits, which begins August 1 before their junior year.

They'll also be allowed to be represented by agents, in college and, for some, as high school prospects.

The NCAA's new rules allowing "elite" prospects to hire agents has blindsided top officials from the NBA and USA Basketball.

Missing in the NCAA's package of rule changes is anything to do with pay for players, a wish from many in the college sports community and the inspiration for a multitude of opinion pieces over the years.

University presidents and chancellors will also now be personally resposible for their athletics programs abiding by the NCAA's rules.

Schools found to be in violation of NCAA rules face stricter penalties, including longer postseason bans (up to five years), coach suspensions (potentially beyond one season), employment limitations, recruiting restrictions and loss of revenue from basketball.
