Hope fades for survivors in Indonesia quake with 131 killed

Some Australians are still stranded on the Gili Islands off Lombok's nothern coast, the scene of a mass evacuation. Collapsed buildings and bridges, impassable roads littered with debris - it's been an impossible task for rescuers in the Indonesian quake.

Salama, 52, was at a prayer class in the mosque of Karangpangsor village when the 6.9-magnitude quake struck the tropical holiday island on Sunday evening, killing more than 100 people and leaving thousands homeless as buildings collapsed.

More than 100 people have been confirmed dead after a 6.9 magnitude natural disaster hit Indonesia's islands of Lombok and Bali on Sunday.

The national disaster agency's spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the death toll had risen to 131 from 105 announced Tuesday.

This reporter saw collapsed buildings, damaged roads, broken water pipes and crushed vehicles, and met survivors who shared stories of hope and despair.

Among the destroyed structures is the Jabal Nur mosque in Lading-Lading, where soldiers pulled out a man from a space under the mosque's flattened roof. The number of victims was unknown. All but two of were killed on Lombok; the others died on Bali.

More than 20,000 people have reportedly been displaced from their homes.

"We are going to Singapore, we just want to get out of Indonesia to be honest", Todd said. "The customers managed to escape, but he himself didn't", Sahril said.

"We don't know for sure how many people are alive under the rubble", said Mr Nugroho.

"When the shaking stopped we remained outside and waited for tsunami warnings, one was issued soon after and was lifted an hour or so later but we were warned to stay away from beaches".

Montgomery-Lay said she was in touch with the Canadian Consulate in Jakarta, but she was told there was nothing they could do at that point.

The organisation's Silverius Tasman said it and the Indonesian Government were "doing all we can to help these people, but we do need more support to allow us to reach these most affected populations".
