Unveiling of provincial buck a beer scheme expected today

On Tuesday morning, Premier Doug Ford will be at the Barley Days Brewery in Picton to announce the new minimum price of a bottle or can of beer will be $1.

Currently, one of the lowest priced beers from an independent Ontario brewery is Cool Beer's Stonewall Light which retails at $1.45 per 275 ml bottle.

The move was one of Ford's promises during the spring election campaign.

Brewers are not required to charge the lower rate and few in the province sell at the current minimum.

A buck a beer is nearly here. "Here we have a premier that's cutting income to the very poorest amongst us as a priority and at the same time subsidizing buck a beer", NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said, referring to the Tories' plan to wind down a basic income pilot project.

"Promises made, promises kept", Ford said.

Walmart cashier steps in after nail salon refuses woman with cerebral palsy
Peters, 36, has cerebral palsy, which can make her hands shake. "I just wanted to make her day special", Ebony Harris said. Harris hopes this will inspire others to treat people with disabilities in the same way they would like to be treated.

Ford says the buck a beer will allow for more competition in the market.

Before 2008, "buck-a-beer" did exist, until the Liberal government boosted the price of a 24-pack of beer from $24 to $25.60. In a statement, Mothers Against Drunk Driving said lowering the price of beer carries a risk to public safety, and can lead to an increase in alcohol-related problems including impaired driving.

That will be in place by the Labour Day weekend, said a source.

When asked whether participating brewers would be subsidized to make up the difference in price, CTV News Toronto was told there would be "zero" financial incentives. Beers lowered to $1 could receive promotional and advertising support, short-term discounts and more prominent displays in the stores. The price floor will affect beer that contains an alcohol percentage below 5.6%.

"Essentially, if anyone does it, I predict that dollar beer is going to taste like it's worth about a dollar", Johnson said.

"The impact extends beyond the price of a beer".
