Trump administration finalizes tariffs on $16 billion in Chinese goods

The U.S. has finalized a set of tariffs that will impact $16 billion in Chinese goods, the U.S. Trade Representative's Office said Tuesday.

USTR said that only five product lines were deleted from a list initially proposed on June 15, but semiconductors, among the largest categories, remained on the list.

The list of products impacted by the tariffs includes an array of lubricants, plastics and polymers, tractor engines, electric motors, railway cars, "fertilizer distributors" and some measuring instruments, among others.

The Trump administration has deepened its trade war with China by announcing a new round of tariffs worth $US16 billion ($22 billion), a move the Chinese government has warned will trigger another round of retaliatory tariffs on USA exports. The U.S. has already slapped China with tariffs on $34 billion worth of goods, and Beijing responded with tariffs of equal value when the levies kicked in last month.

President Donald Trump announced the tariffs totaling $50 billion in April.

The tariffs are aimed at industrial, rather than consumer, imports. Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared to relent in ratcheting up trade tensions, suggesting China may reduce tariffs on USA auto exports to China.
