FCA complains against Mahindra over Roxor - Jeep similarity

"Roxor was conceived, designed, engineered and is being produced in Metro Detroit by Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA)", Mahindra had said at the time of launch.

FCA wants Mahindra to stop importing Roxor into USA via CKD route and assemble at Detroit.

Jeep parent company Fiat Chrysler is seeking to block India's Mahindra from selling the ROXOR 4x4 in the U.S., Bloomberg reports, arguing that the vehicle looks too much like its own Jeep Wrangler.

"In fact, the accused product was modelled after the original Willys Jeep", FCA said in its complaint, that included photos comparing the two. Built in India since 1949, the Roxor's first ancestor was a Willys-licensed design that very closely resembled the military Jeep.

Unveiled earlier this year by Mahindra's American subsidiary Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA), the Roxor ushers in a new innings for Mahindra in the United States - a market where it has failed to establish itself successfully - by offering tough, durable and rugged off-road vehicles.

Mahindra debuted the Roxor in March but hasn't yet but the little vehicle on sale because the business has been building a dealer body.

Unlike side-by-side competitors such as the Polaris RZR ATV and Kawasaki Mule Pro, the Mahindra Roxor does not come with smaller twin-cylinder engines and belt-drive. Looks aside, the Roxor has also garnered interest for its specifications. On one hand, the Roxor does a very close imitation of the Jeep CJ-5, but on the other, few people shopping for an authentic Jeep Wrangler will be satisfied by an off-highway-only machine with limited weather protection and a top speed of 45 miles per hour. The steel-bodied Roxor also gets four-wheel drive as standard. In the complaint, FCA has also claimed that Mahindra's access to cheap labour and increasing investments in the us could harm FCA's goodwill and business.

According to the complaint filed, the Roxor is similar in design to Jeep's traditional design. Keep watching this space for more.

Mahindra & Mahindra managing director Pawan Goenka told motoring.com.au in March that the Roxor was designed specifically for the United States, where it will be a "game-changer" in the side-by-side class. Fiat Chrysler fears that Mahindra, which has opened up an assembling facility in Auburn Hills, Michigan for the Roxor, will undercut Jeep sales in the United States thanks to its lower prices.
