Moe continues to oppose carbon tax despite feds relaxing regulations

Canada's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change updated its carbon tax policy framework this week and revealed that subsidy rates for industrial emitters were up across the board, but that cement, steel-making, lime and nitrogen fertiliser companies would be entitled to the highest subsidies.

"I would say the government is open to further changes across the board", said Moffet.

But those reductions weren't enough to sway opponents.

The government says the plan all along was to set an initial target and then amend it after more specific review, and that the changes made will not have a material impact on the amount of greenhouse gases that will be cut from Canada's total annual emissions.

According to Premier Moe, the government has launched their appeal in opposition of the carbon tax.

Saskatchewan opposes the federal pricing plan, while new Ontario Premier Doug Ford scrapped the province's cap-and-trade system in one his first moves after taking office.

"We've been clear since the beginning that we would be consulting with industry and environmental experts to find the best ways to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and stay competitive - and that's exactly what we've done".

Attorney General Don Morgan said in his own statement that Saskatchewan, "supports Ontario in their case to challenge the federal carbon tax in court".

Contending Ottawa is acting like "big brother", the Saskatchewan government has put forward its written legal argument against a federally-imposed carbon tax.

He reiterated that Ottawa's carbon tax policy is flawed and won't work in Canada if it hasn't worked around the world.

However, the new rules set to take effect in the new year will increase the carbon tax threshold to 80 per cent of emissions intensity. "We are encouraged that the government is consulting with us". Even with the change, Saskatchewan's stance remains the same.

"This is a sensible decision for both the environment and the economy", said Elgie.
