Iowa reports 1st West Nile virus death of 2018

The agency says an adult resident of the town of Mead fell ill on July 27 and was hospitalized the next day.

West Nile virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.

The province said the risk is expected to remain high in the coming weeks.

For the first time in five years, mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile virus in Haldimand-Norfolk.

"Luckily, the summer to this point hasn't been extremely wet, which has limited prime breeding conditions for mosquitoes", Callanan said.

"While mosquito numbers are low in most communities, surveillance shows the numbers of infected Culex tarsalis continue to increase throughout southern Manitoba", a release from the province said.

Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headache, body aches, a skin rash and swollen lymph glands. Less than one percent of those infected develop serious illness of the nervous system like encephalitis or meningitis.
