Fortnite for Android Will Bypass Google’s Play Store

Instead of nabbing the battle royale title from the Google Play store like normal, Android users will need to manually download a file from Epic's official Fortnite website and install the game that way.

Epic Games' chief executive Tim Sweeney said 30% was "disproportionate" to the contribution Google made.

Furthermore, Sweeney calls the 30 percent "store tax" a "high cost" in the game industry, particularly given the fact that Android is an open platform where Google is not distributing or managing all hardware, like Microsoft and Sony do with their respective consoles.

Sweeney says Epic has chatted to Google about their shared goal of keeping players safe on the platform and that, along with the issue of money, the move is motivated by the company's love of open platforms and the drive to have a "direct relationship" with customers on as many platforms as possible. This means that Epic would have released Fortnite the same way on iOS, if only Apple didn't require apps to be vetted before they made it out to the public.

In the future, the decision not to optimize the game for less-powerful Android devices may also help Epic roll out new Fortnite features.

White House slams China’s ‘weak’ tariff threat and ‘lousy’ economy
Trump has threatened to slap tariffs on virtually all of China's exports to the United States in the tit-for-tat trade conflict. The two countries have been embroiled for months in a trade conflict that has threatened to hurt consumers in both countries.

Players will instead have to use a separate installer provided by Epic to download the game directly from the Fortnite website. When it does hit Android, EPIC wants to make sure that all of those profits make their way back to the company without passing through Google's pocket first.

Epic Games announced that its highly-popular Fortnite game will soon be available for Android, but it will not come through the Google Play Store. Once the real deal is released, we'll let you know, as early as possible. Eventually, the game should be available on other devices, too. One of the reasons why Pokemon GO ended support for some iOS devices is because developer Niantic wanted to keep pushing the experience further.

But so far, Android users have been unable to get in on the action. There's a significant financial motivation to bypass the Google Play Store as well.

However, these platforms are tightly controlled, and make it hard for people to install software from unofficial sources. Lastly, the CEO states that Android's permission system will help protect users by informing them of what an app will be allowed to do. Sweeney doesn't seem to anxious about this, saying that "Gamers have proven able to adopt safe software practices, and gaming has thrived on the open PC platform through many sources".
