Plane that left Pembroke today has crashed killing three people

Police and federal authorities were investigating the crash of a small plane in rural ME that killed three people today after the aircraft departed from Canada.

A spokesman for the FAA says the plane crashed on approach to the airport. However, this was most likely an emergency landing and Greenville would not have been a scheduled pit stop for the flight.

The names of the victims and where they are from were not immediately available, said Greenville Police Chief Jeff Pomerleau in a 3 p.m. news conference near the scene.

Crandall said he'd been receiving calls from aviation authorities informing him that the Canadian plane had communicated it was in distress and needed to make an emergency landing at his community's airport. "They landed just outside the runway".

"It's a sad day. and now there's a whole lot of people hurting from it, all the families", said Crandall, who is also manager of the Town of Greenville.

A cause has yet to be determined, and the FAA is investgating.

Greenville is about 240 kilometres north of Portland.

Crandall said that to his knowledge, the airport had never had an incident like Monday.

It does not serve commercial flights. All three people on board were killed.

"We already knew there were no survivors", he said.
