Madden 19: EA Apologizes For Removing Colin Kaepernick's Name From A Song

A song on a new NFL-based video game was reportedly edited to cut a reference to Colin Kaepernick. That, in turn, caused protests from those who felt Kaepernick's gesture was disrespectful.

EA Sports has revealed the official PC requirements for Madden NFL 19.

Big Sean, who makes a guest appearance in the song and performs the verse that references Kaepernick, weighed in on Thursday before EA issued its statement.

EA regularly censors curse words from the songs in its video game soundtracks, but the game maker has apparently engaged in a different kind of song censorship this week-and the censored rapper in question isn't happy about it.

After the news began to gain traction, YG and Big Sean spoke out against the decision, maintaining that they were not notified and had not approved of his name being scrubbed. But if that's the case, why bother putting a track featuring Kaepernick's name in the game at all - much less two years in a row? We messed up, and the edit should never have happened. Changing Lives tweeted the bleep on Wednesday, and the post was retweeted Thursday by Kaepernick's girlfriend, Nessa Diab, and later Kaepernick himself.

The game doesn't officially release to the public until August 10, but ProFootballTalk confirmed that Kaepernick's name was, indeed, taken out in an advance copy of the game.

Kaepernick began protesting police violence and racial profiling in 2016 by first sitting, and then kneeling, during the NFL's pre-game performance of the national anthem. "Members of our team misunderstood the fact that while we don't have rights to include Colin Kaepernick in the game, this doesn't affect soundtracks". In 2017, he became a free agent, and subsequently filed a collusion grievance against the NFL.

Regardless, it's unusual for EA Sports to remove his name from the song as if it's some sort of expletive.
