Zanu PF in landslide victory

At Harare's Parirenyatwa Hospital, a family wept in an emergency room where a man who had been fatally shot lay on a stretcher.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is by law given up to five days to release the results.

But, is there a possibility that the opposition MDC-Alliance which has lost most of the Parliamentary seats to win the Presidential contest?

The results were expected on August 4.

The election was Zimbabwe's first election since President Robert Mugabe left office in 2017. Police fired tear gas and grabbed more canisters from an officer carrying them in a crate.

The ruling Zanu-PF party has won the majority of parliamentary seats.

Observers had raised concerns about the independence of the electoral commission ahead of the vote, pointing to close ties to the ruling party and the military.

The crowds chanted: "We want Chamisa".

"What they have done is intimidate people in the rural areas saying, "we will kill you if you vote MDC" and so on and then the worldwide observers say this election was free and fair". Hundreds jeered and pelted the police vans with stones.

"It is imperative that the results process is credible and transparent, with a full breakdown by polling station so that confidence in the outcome can be assured", Brok said.

What results have been declared?

On the same day she also revealed a planned 3 per cent welfare increase for September would be cut in half. In the March budget the Liberals announced they would raise income assistance rates by three per cent.

Supporters of the Movement for Democratic Change, Zimbabwe's primary opposition party, protest against alleged fraud by the election authority and ruling party Wednesday in Harare. There are 210 seats in the National Assembly's lower house. ZEC said that 1.3 percent of registered voters could not cast their vote because they presented the wrong documents at polling units.

The Zimbabwean Electoral Commission (ZEC) was announcing results of the poll.

The BBC reports that the announcement on the presidential poll was not made because representatives of some of the 23 candidates had failed to turn up to verify the results.

Another member of the opposition, Eveson Matambanadzo, said: "The results we have are cooked if you compare the people who voted on the ground to the results that are there it doesn't tally." . Otherwise, a run-off election will be held on 8 September.

According to the SADC elections observer mission head, the constitution of the ZEC executive was above board. The EU mission questioned why presidential votes were counted first but were being announced last.

The assessments are critical for Zimbabwe, because foreign governments, including the USA, have made any financial aid conditional on holding democratic elections.

Mnangagwa said government had gone out of its way to ensure that the harmonised elections, which are about to conclude, unfold in an environment which was both calm and peaceful.

Protesters here have called for intervention from Southern African Development Community and the African Union, calling this a war between citizens and the Zanu-PF led government.

What are the parties saying?

The demonstrators, most of whom were supporters from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, unilaterally declared the victory of their own candidate, Nelson Chamisa.

That omission gave room for the electoral commission, which ZESN and the opposition have accused of bias, to manipulate the results in favour of Mnangagwa and the ZANU-PF party, Biti said.
