France bans smartphones and tablets in schools

Smartphones and tablets have been banned from all French schools ahead of the academic year, after a new law was voted through Parliament yesterday. High school teachers and administrators are still offered the choice to adopt the ban themselves or opt for a less draconian method of keeping "bad mobile phone use" under control. It is a fundamental role of education, and this law allows it'.

"After the Senate, final adoption by the National Assembly of the law with only one vote against".

The ban, which will apply to pupils up to the age of 15, is created to send a message to French society according to Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer.

"Thank you to all parliamentarians for this progress for our schools", Mr Blanquer said.

'Our main role is to protect children and adolescents.

"In reality, the ban has already been made", Corbière continued, referring to a law approved in 2010 that banned the use of smartphones "during all teaching activity".

Barcelona coach Valverde impressed by Arthur, Lenglet debuts
Eriksen saw his shot blocked, but Son latched onto the rebound to divert a shot into the unguarded net. The leveler then arrived when Barcelona struggled with another low cross, this time from the right.

Alexis Corbiere, the deputy leader of the Unbowed France party, which abstained from the vote, and a former teacher, said the law was unnecessary because of the existing code.

"This isn't a 21st century law in our eyes, but a law from the era of news channels and binary debate", Mr Corbiere said.

Clearly in the United States and other places that do not allow phone usage during class or at school, however, that has not stopped students from texting under their desks or playing Flappy Bird (lol) behind a classmate.

The only exceptions are disabled students, extra-curricular duties, as well as "pedagogical use", which also sounds fairly vague, but will most likely require the explicit approval of an educator.

The new law fulfils a campaign promise by President Emmanuel Macron, but it has been criticised by the opposition as a "publicity stunt".
