There are now 12,000 firefighters battling the flames across the state.

"Extreme fire conditions continue to challenge firefighters", Cal Fire said in a statement. That pull creates strong winds, which form the vortex. The second victim was identified as Don Ray Smith, 81, of Pollack Pines, California, according to KNTV.

The devastation covers an area the size of Philadelphia, and the fire has claimed the lives of Fire Inspector Jeremy Stoke, along with another smoke eater whose name has not been released.

Noland was among the 38,000 people who evacuated after the so-called Carr Fire roared into the outskirts of Redding in Shasta County. Fueled by high temperatures, wind and low humidity, the blaze destroyed multiple homes and at least one historic building.

The Carr Fire is among 17 major fires blazing in California with more than 200,000 acres burning, the National Park Service noted during a press conference.

The fire remained only 5 percent contained Sunday despite "aggressive" efforts to control the blaze, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

President Donald Trump on Saturday declared the fire an emergency, authorizing federal funds for disaster relief efforts. As of Saturday afternoon, those fires had burned almost 100 square miles (260 square kilometers).

Four evacuation centers have been opened in the area.

An investigator Saturday wouldn't say if any remains had been found, but police closed off the road to the house.

He says more than 100 officers and 260 National Guard soldiers are helping with evacuations and providing security in the empty neighborhoods. One of the homes lost belonged to Shyla and Jason Campbell.

"We ask for your thoughts and prayers for his family and the RFD as we process this tragic loss", the union posted on Twitter.

The woman's husband, Ed Bledsoe, told a TV channel that he left them at home to run an errand on Thursday night. They returned Friday to find little more than ash.

"It's pretty emotional", Terri Hill said.

Bledsoe said he didn't believe the fire could jump the nearby Sacramento River.

Bledsoe's husband, Ed, who had the couple's only vehicle, had gone to buy supplies before any evacuation order was issued, family members said.

"He called and said, 'Grandpa you need to come, the fire is coming at our house now, '" Bledsoe said of a phone call he had with his great-great-grandson while he was gone.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Bledsoe's family said she desperately put a wet blanket over the children as their home burned.

"It looked like a war zone, " he said.

The lake, believed to be minus-90 degrees Fahrenheit, is similar to what lies beneath the ice cap in Greenland and the Antarctic. The brightest reflections from the base layer - close to the centre of this image - is interpreted as a pond of liquid water.
