Prosecutors have at least 12 recordings by Trump lawyer Cohen

Tonight, it was released by CNN.

CNN obtained and released the audio recording Tuesday night.

Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, recorded the conversation in 2016.

Davis told Axios that Cohen is sending a message with the tape's release: "I am no longer the previous Michael Cohen that you knew - taking a bullet for Donald Trump, saying anything to defend him, being a good soldier". Trump is heard asking, "What financing?" and when Cohen says, "We'll have to pay", Trump responds, "Pay with cash", but after that, the audio is unclear.

"The feds aren't reaching out to him and (Michael Cohen) needs to make them want him", this person said. Trump's lawyers say the payments were never made.

Giuliani provided a transcript to CNN that Trump told Cohen, "Don't pay with cash. check". The word check is nowhere to be heard in the recording.

American Media Inc., the parent company of the National Enquirer, purchased the rights to McDougal's story for $150,000 but never published the story.

On the tape, Trump and Cohen can be heard discussing payments to AMI Chairman David Pecker, a friend of Trump's. The Wall Street Journal broke the story on this on November 4, 2016. That was clearly a lie.

Cohen's recent remarks about loyalty to his family have sparked speculation that he could seek a deal to cooperate with prosecutors.

"He always told me he loved me", McDougal told CNN earlier this year.

A major unanswered question is whether or not Cohen reimbursed the Enquirer for their payment to McDougal. However, the new audio recording makes that claim suspicious.

The tape appears to contradict the Trump campaign's later claim that Trump knew nothing about payments to the model, Karen McDougal, made through a media company. Eleven of the recordings handed over to prosecutors in New York's Southern District are conversations Cohen had with members of the media, two sources familiar with the recordings told ABC News. Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor, said the other 11 recordings are of Cohen discussing Trump with other, unnamed individuals. Giuliani went as far as to say Cohen was reimbursed up to $470,000 (later revising it down to $420,000). During the office's 2014 investigation of a NY state anti-corruption commission, the Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption, for example, Petrillo was angered with prosecutors after a newspaper story disclosed that his client in that probe was to be interviewed by federal investigators, according to people familiar with the matter.
