Arsenal star Ozil cited a "feeling of racism and disrespect" as the motivation for his decision to step down from the national team, which he confirmed on Sunday in a series of statements posted on social media.

"I will no longer stand for being a scapegoat for his (Grindel's) incompetence and inability to do his job properly", he said.

The 29-year-old, who is of Turkish decent but born and raised in Germany, said he could no longer withstand the pressure of being a scapegoat for the for defending World Cup champions' woes at the just concluded Fifa World Cup in Russian Federation where they failed to reach the last round of 16.

"Like many people, my ancestry traces back to more than one country".

"It was about me representing the highest office of my family's country".

Hoeness also said that Bayern deliberately single out Ozil as a weak link of the Arsenal side when the two teams face each other in the Uefa Champions League.

The German superstar also revealed that he has received racial taunts both in person and in hate mail from fans of the German team following the World Cup exit.

The criticism surrounding the 29-year-old has only increased, as Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness added to the heat with his comments on Monday, but Bellerin showed his support.

"For them, it was no longer good to be seen with me and (they) called the situation "crisis management", he said.
