New York Daily News slashes newsroom staffing in half

Rumors started swirling about the coming layoffs on Sunday after Tronc sent an email to staff telling them to "plan to be in the NY newsroom on Monday at 9 a.m. for an important message" from Executive Vice President of digital Grant Whitmore.

The "new" Daily News will apparently focus on "crime, civil justice and public responsibility".

The 9 a.m. meeting - which lasted all of one minute, sources said - did little to clear up who was being cut, outside of Rich and Managing Editor Kristen Lee.

The job cuts marked the latest round of staff reductions at newspapers owned by Tronc, formerly known as Tribune Publishing, which bought out the Daily News less than a year ago.

Tronc in September acquired the New York Daily News and its printing plant in Jersey City, N.J., for $1, along with the assumption of operational and pension liabilities.

The move now to gut the Daily News's newsroom will be a blow to local watchdog journalism in the nation's largest city.

"The decisions being announced today reflect the realities of our business and the need to adapt an ever-changing media environment", Tronc added in the email.

Tronc executives said in the company memo that they are "fundamentally restructuring" the Daily News to address the significant financial challenges it has faced for years.

"If you hate democracy and think local governments should operate unchecked and in the dark, then today is a good day for you", Rich said in a tweet on Monday.

During York's tenure, The Morning Call won numerous journalism awards, including Best Overall Newspaper in the daily category at the Pennsylvania Press Conference for 2017.

Tronc declined to comment on the cutbacks or confirm precisely how many staff were affected, but the rival New York Post said the Daily News had some 85 editorial staff before the layoffs. The union had been weakened, it had left the iconic Daily News building on 42nd Street-made famous in the Superman movies-and moved into a graceless brick in the brutalist style that teetered over the West Side rail yards.

The Daily News has won 11 Pulitzer Prizes since its founding in 1919, including one a year ago for its reporting on police abuse of eviction rules to oust poor residents from their homes.

"We've gained a deeper understanding of our readership". With the exception of a few particular employees who are not in the office today, Human Resources will communicate with everyone leaving the Daily News by the end of the day.

UPDATE: Now, the tabloid's travails have been caught up in the vicious feud between New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Let there be no doubt: these colleagues are highly valued and will be missed.

Zach Haberman, 41, the paper's breaking news editor, was let go after nearly six years.

I know that many of you will have questions, and we are committed to answering them as quickly as possible. "I am heartbroken for them today, and for New York", said New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood.

The Tronc message categorized this change as a "vital transformation".
