Ex-prison beauty queen Ruth Kamande sentenced to death

Miss Lang'ata Women Prison victor Ruth Kamande, who was found guilty of killing her boyfriend by stabbing him 22 times in 2015, has been sentenced to death.

Ruth Kamande was arrested and charged with the murder for stabbing her 24-year-old boyfriend Farid Mohammed to death.

Rights group Amnesty International called the sentence "cruel, inhumane and outdated". "This sentence is a blow to Kenya's progressive record in commuting death sentences to terms of imprisonment", the statement by Executive Director Irungu Houghton said.

High Court judge Jessie Lesiit on Thursday noted that Ruth Kamande deliberately stabbed her boyfriend 25 times with the intention of causing pain, leading to his death.

However, the prosecution urged the court to hand Ms Kamande a death penalty, arguing that she was arrogant during the trial.

She noted that despite the Supreme Court finding the death penalty unconstitutional in a decision it rendered in December past year, the punishment was still enshrined in statutes.

"She stabbed again and again and took pleasure in it".

The victim's family insisted the sentence matched the crime. The judge held that Kamande acted in malice adding that her actions proved the same.

"He had just started his job when his life was cut short".

But what most people do not know is that Kamande is also a trained auxiliary paralegal and has used these skills to help her fellow inmates navigate the complex judicial system that often throws them into the deep end of court proceedings without a lawyer to guide them.

In her defence, the prison beauty queen had defended herself by telling the court that she had discovered that her boyfriend was HIV positive, a matter which escalated issues and threatened her when she confronted him over his health condition.
