Activist from ME to star as TV's first transgender superhero

If the name Nia Nal sounds familiar, it's because she is the ancestor of Nura Nal, the comic book character you might know best as Dream Girl, a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. She voices her concern by stating how "It feels fitting to say with great power, comes great responsibility" Then, she adds, "I'm nervous because I want to do it right".

The cast and crew of Supergirlrevealed a new addition to the cast at their panel at SDCC. "She's pure, she has this fierce drive to protect people in marginalized communities".

"A$3 lot of different shows have been really eager to tell the stories of transgender people, especially transgender youth because it's just such an important issue right now in our society and the world", she said.

Maines reveals her character's storyline doesn't necessarily revolve around her being trans. "Nia is so much more than 'the trans superhero, '" she explains, calling out television's habit of focusing exclusively on a trans character's trans experience.

Maines, who appeared on Royal Pains and The Trans List, is a trans activist.
