Salmonella outbreak in 26 states linked to raw turkey

Some people have to be hospitalized, and in rare cases salmonella causes death.

The salmonella outbreak affected people in Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin, according to the CDC.

Officials say so far 40 people have been hospitalized.

"Always handle raw turkey carefully and cook it thoroughly to prevent food poisoning", the CDC recommends to the public.

The outbreak strain of Salmonella Reading has been identified in samples from raw turkey pet food in Minnesota, from raw turkey products from 19 slaughter and six processing establishments, and from live turkeys from several states. On Thursday, the agency said in a statement that it has not identified a single source for the outbreak. This means the outbreak might be widespread in the turkey industry.
