Having Dinner Before 9 PM Lowers Breast And Prostate Cancer Risk

Avoiding tobacco products is a biggie, as is taking care of your skin when it's in the sun, but have you ever considered your choice of dinner time as a contributing factor to your risk of cancer?

But according to a new study evening snacking and eating dinner too late can increase the risk of breast and prostate cancer, by disrupting the body's internal clock and metabolism.

"Modern life involves mistimed sleeping and eating patterns that in experimental studies are associated with adverse health effects", the researchers explain.

"Our study concludes that adherence to diurnal eating patterns is associated with a lower risk of cancer", commented lead author Manolis Kogevinas, adding that the findings "highlight the importance of assessing circadian rhythms in studies on diet and cancer". Your day's last meal should be healthy, light and on time. Researchers at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) chose to determine whether meal timing influenced the risk of breast and prostate cancer.

In the study, the scientists followed 621 people who were diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1,205 who had breast cancer, while 872 male and 1,321 female patients without cancer identified as the control group were chosen randomly from primary health centres throughout Spain.

The UK-led project comes as Britain is due to leave the European Union in less than nine months. "I have to be optimistic". The Typhoon , in contrast, was developed by the four-nation group of Germany, Spain, Britain and Italy in the 1980s.

If the findings are confirmed, Kogevinas added that, "they will have implications for cancer prevention recommendations, which now do not take meal timing into account".

The participants, were interviewed about their meal timing, sleep habits and chronotype - an individual attribute correlating with preference for morning or evening activity.

Participants were also asked to complete a Food Frequency Questionnaire to look at their dietary habits and adherence to cancer prevention recommendations. Experts are also of the opinion that people who work in the night-shifts and experience circadian disruption are at the higher risk of prostate and breast cancer.

These two cancers are reportedly the most common and are also strongly associated with night-shift work, circadian disruption and adjustment of biological rhythms.
