Greenland village watches looming iceberg

Greenland: An 11-million tonne iceburg, the size of a hill, is threatening the tiny village of Innaarsuit on the western coast of Greenland.

Police spokeswoman Lina Davidsen said: "Residents were evacuated in the early hours of Friday in fears that a flood would hit the place as a result of the broken iceberg".

A danger zone close to the coast has been evacuated and people have been moved further up a steep slope where the settlement lies, a Greenland police spokesman told Reuters.

Local officials say they have never seen such a big iceberg before.

An iceberg four miles (six kilometers) wide has broken off from a glacier in eastern Greenland and scientists have captured the dramatic event on video.

Authorities fear the village could be flooded if the iceberg breaks apart.

"Nobody is staying unnecessarily close to the beach and all children have been told to stay in areas that are high up".

The village's power station and fuel tanks are close to the shore, she said. Hog has spent a lot of time researching the village, which is now in danger from the iceberg, and says that it increases the risk of potential tidal waves or floods.

A very big iceberg is menacing a tiny island village in Greenland.

Warnings have come from the experts regarding the extremely uneventful risks from the iceberg to occur frequently from the change in climate.

Last year, at least four people were killed in Greenland when a huge wave washed ashore in June.

"It sounded like rockets going off", he said.

While the Hollands are studying Greenland, David Holland said that "the real concern is in Antarctica, where everything is so big the stakes are much higher".
