Regional Change Coming To Sex Education Curriculum News Centre News

The Ontario government will expand beer and wine sales to corner, grocery and big box stores, the throne speech confirms.

Progressive Conservative House Leader Todd Smith says the government will act quickly on all three items because of they are time-sensitive and can not wait until the fall, when the house normally returns.

Ford nonetheless stressed those priorities in a statement Thursday, saying his government would get to work quickly so "people can see real change fast".

OECTA, an organization representing almost 50,000 teachers in Ontario's Catholic school system, was among "thousands" of experts and stakeholder groups who were consulted and helped develop the the sex-ed curriculum axed this week by Ford.

Earlier this week, Ford's new Progressive Conservative government said teachers will use the 1998 version of the sex-ed curriculum this fall as consultations are carried out for a new document.

The leader of Ontario's Opposition said Friday that Doug Ford's decision to repeal Ontario's modernized sex-ed curriculum and replace it with a 20-year-old version was a move to please social conservatives and one that would hurt the province's children.

The money was to be paid out from revenues of the cap-and-trade system, which Ford began dismantling nearly immediately after taking office, as he had promised to do.

The Ford government cancelled cap and trade as part of its commitment to cut gas prices by $0.10 a litre.

The Tories are projecting a "responsible, modest and pragmatic" return to a balanced budget.

"A race back in time will only put students at risk and deny young people the supports, dignity and the equality that they deserve", said Horwath.

"Policing, as we've been talking about for the last number of years, has been a job that's been demonized", Toronto Police Association President Mike McCormack said.

"Politically, I think what he's doing is smart", he said.
