Ostapenko blasts past Cibulkova to reach Wimbledon semis

Ostapenko blasts past Cibulkova to reach Wimbledon semis

In only her fourth tournament since the birth of her daughter Olympia in September, the 23-time Grand Slam champion is closing in on her first major title as a mother. "It's great to be in the semis", Kerber said after she finally sealed the win on her seventh match point.

Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova talks with an official during the fourth-round match against Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh at Wimbledon in London July 9, 2018.

Ostapenko has now had three different coaches working alongside her mother within the last 12 months - Schaap, Taylor, and Anabel Medina Garrigues, who was in her corner during her Roland Garros title run a year ago. Despite going behind, Kasatkina was arguably the most striking hitter out there but it was Kerber's experience that ensured he remained on top.

Having lifted the title in the last two years she played here, in 2015 and 2016, this quarter-final success takes Williams' winning streak at the All England Club to 19 matches.

Cibulkova's draw had been tough, with the average rank of her opponent in the first four rounds being 33, while Ostapenko's average sat at 110. "When I'm home, I'm doing it a couple times a week". Del Potro leads two sets to one. "Playing on Centre Court is always great".

With world No. 1 Rafael Nadal waiting for the victor, Tuesday's fourth set, played in much cooler conditions than the first three the day before, turned into a mini-epic before Del Potro eventually prevailed 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5). The younger player, though, soon settled, rose to the occasion and the crowd, and a swing backhand volley got roars of approval, 2-4.

But, hitting her serve with more ferocity, Serena wrestled back control of the match with a crucial break in the fourth game of the second set.

Kasatkina was not done, though.

Kasatkina was unable to force a third set, though, drilling a forehand into the base of the net at full stretch to end her best run at Wimbledon.

On Monday, the twice Grand Slam champion did not let such expectations weigh her down and she set up a last-eight showdown with Russian 14th seed Daria Kasatkina. Could she hold this time?

"For me I think everything is positive that I changed the coach". One 25-shot rally will go down as perhaps the finest of the year, as both women scrambled, recovered, slipped over, made drops and angles, before Kasatkina made the error.

Breaks were exchanged again, Kerber going down to 15 as she served for the match for the first time.

"I did ballroom dancing from the age of five to 12", she said. "He doesn't mind if I miss the shot, but I go for the next one".

And on Tuesday, she booked her spot in the semi-finals at SW19 in typically calm fashion.

Julia Goerges advanced to her first Wimbledon semifinal with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over 20th-seeded Kiki Bertens. "So I just started to play better".

That first game consisted of eight points: Three were unforced errors by Ostapenko, including a double-fault to begin the proceedings; the other five were winners by her, including a 100 miles per hour ace to close the hold.

Kerber takes on Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko in the other semifinal.
