10 killed in second attack on Election Rally

At least 70 people, including an election candidate, were killed and over 120 were injured in a blast at a rally in Pakistan's Balochistan province on Friday afternoon, Dawn reported, quoting provincial Health Minister Faiz Kakar. The bombing was the biggest attack in Pakistan in more than a year and the third incident of election-related violence this week.

Durrani, the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) candidate, survived the attack.

A spokesman for Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party confirmed they were arrested soon afterwards. This was the first major incident of violence ahead of the elections in Pakistan.

"The death toll has now risen to 25", Agha Umar Bungalzai, the provincial home minister.

Raisani was the younger brother of former provincial chief minister Mir Aslam Raisani.

At least 30 people were wounded in the blast, which occurred just after the rally hosted by the JUI-F religious political party ended on Friday morning, said a police official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Siraj's teenage son, Akmal Raisani, had also been killed in an attack during a football match in the same district in 2011.

Durrani is running against cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, whose Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI) is one of the front-runners in the July 25 vote.

The former chief minister, whose name is in the list forwarded to the Interior Ministry by NACTA, was leaving a corner meeting when an improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a motorcycle some 50 metres away from the venue went off.

Mr Khan, who hopes to become the next prime minister, condemned Friday's attack against his opponent, Mr Durrani.

Days earlier a bombing claimed by the Pakistani Taliban targeted a rally by the Awami National Party (ANP) in the city of Peshawar on Tuesday.
