Man who harassed woman over Puerto Rico shirt charged with hate crime

An Illinois police officer who drew criticism after he was caught on video appearing to ignore a woman's pleas for help as a man harassed her about a Puerto Rican flag shirt resigned his position late Wednesday, officials said.

Officer Patrick Connor had been placed on desk duty pending an investigation into the matter, and was scheduled to attend a hearing with his bosses on Thursday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

"That officer did absolutely nothing - he did absolutely zero", Ms Irizarry said in her 36-minute long Facebook live broadcast. A spokesman said the investigation into the incident continues and aspects of it will be further addressed, but offered no further information or details. As of Thursday morning, the video had be seen 1.5 million times.

Trybus is facing a misdemeanor assault charge.

"OK, OK", Ms Irizarry says, trying to placate him.

Officer Patrick Connor, a 12-year veteran with the Forest Preserves of Cook County, was initially placed on desk duty after cellphone footage showed him allowing Mia Irizzary to be verbally abused.

"You're not going to change us", 62-year-old Trybus is heard saying in the video.

Mia Irizarry posted a video that went viral, capturing an ugly scene as she was trying to celebrate her 24th birthday peacefully in the Forest Preserves of Cook County in IL in June.

Even Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló weighed in, saying on Twitter that he was "appalled", and that "a Puerto Rican woman was brutally harassed by a bigot while an officer did not interfere". Other officers eventually arrived and arrested the man.

"He failed to de-escalate the situation and therefore did not ensure a citizen's safety".

The incident in question occurred June 14 in Caldwell Woods Forest Preserve on the Far Northwest Side. This is not the America we all believe in'.
