US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell praises Trump's SCOTUS pick

The nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be the next Supreme Court justice is President Trump's finest hour, his classiest move. During her confirmation hearings a year ago after she was nominated for U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, she was pressed about the impact her Catholic religious beliefs have on her decisions. Kavanaugh then clerked for appellate judges Walter Stapleton and Alex Kozinski before clerking for Justice Kennedy - whose seat Kavanaugh would take if confirmed.

A GOP official said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had suggested Kyl for the task. In addition to Kavanaugh, in recent days he expressed renewed interest in Hardiman, the runner-up when Trump nominated Gorsuch, said two people with knowledge of his thinking.

He fought on the legal team urging Florida not to have a recount in the 2000 presidential election between Bush and Al Gore, Clinton's vice president. While President Trump has made his loyalty to corporations and disdain for women and minorities known over the past 18 months, the confirmation of a justice who shares his loyalties will leave a permanent imbalance on the court and could erode the rights of millions.

The Senate must confirm Trump's nominee, who will be backed campaign-style by the White House and conservative legal organizations.

Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 edge at the moment.

Only a few Republicans and a handful of Democrats are likely in play in the closely divided Senate.

In a dissenting opinion , he said the FCC had overstepped its authority because Congress has not passed a net neutrality law. But the NRDC did emphasize that the Senate must ensure that Kavanaugh respects and enforces the nation's environmental laws.

"Make no mistake about it, Justice Kennedy himself was quite conservative". At the top of that list is abortion. More recently, Kavanaugh was a dissenting vote when the Court of Appeals upheld Obama net neutrality regulations. Kennedy provided a decisive vote in 2015 on an important fair housing case.

Kavanaugh, a federal judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, clerked for retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. That gave Trump his another chance to make a lasting impact on the Supreme Court and to give conservatives a 5-4 majority.

Kavanaugh has a history of siding with religious organizations over groups challenging them. The speakers say the nominee poses a threat to abortion rights and health care protections. Democrats are expected to draw from the Starr report Kavanaugh helped write to criticize Trump - the report argued a president could be impeached for lying to staff or misleading the public. He is a Yale Law School graduate.

Democrats are certain to press Trump's latest nominee on the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion nationwide, a decision some conservatives - particularly conservative Christians - have long wanted to overturn.

He was appointed to the appeals bench by President George W. Bush.
