US may list tariffs on $200 billion more Chinese products

The tariffs could take effect after public consultations end on August 30, according to a statement from the U.S. Trade Representative's office Tuesday.

Trump said last week the United States may ultimately impose tariffs on more than $500 billion worth of Chinese goods - roughly the total amount of USA imports from China previous year. High-level talks between the two countries starting in May failed to deliver a breakthrough to head off a trade war.

"As in the past, the United States is willing to engage in efforts that could lead to a resolution of our concerns about China's unfair trade practices and to China opening its market to USA goods and services", he said. "Unfortunately, China has not changed its behavior - behavior that puts the future of the US economy at risk". The global tally for retaliation against U.S. exports, including by Canada, Mexico and the European Union over steel and aluminum tariffs, will be some $75 billion, according to an analysis by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. China responded with levies of its own, targeting $34 billion in US products such as pork and whiskey.

Tne Trump administration has announced additional China tariffs, say insiders.

Some countries have already announced retaliatory tariffs and other moves that USA industries have said forced them to curb plans for expansion and investments overseas. But Trump hasn't backed down, arguing that China's unfair trading practices are hurting American workers.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said the United States would impose tariffs of 10 percent on the additional Chinese imports.
