Trump's Supreme Court pick would solidify court's conservative bent, experts say

While President Trump has made his loyalty to corporations and disdain for women and minorities known over the past 18 months, the confirmation of a justice who shares his loyalties will leave a permanent imbalance on the court and could erode the rights of millions.

Maine GOP Sen. Susan Collins, who has said she would not vote for a nominee who would overturn Roe v. Wade, praised Kavanaugh's "impressive credentials and extensive experience" on Monday, even as she vowed to carefully vet his nomination.

Murkowski and Collins have been the focus of a concentrated campaign against Kavanaugh by liberal groups and affiliated Democrats. In 2006, President Bush nominated him to the D.C. Court of Appeals.

"No investigation of a president!"

"Judge Kavanaugh's own writings make clear that he would rule against reproductive rights and freedoms, and that he would welcome challenges to the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Tuesday. "Justice Kennedy devoted his career to securing liberty". "I am going to do my due diligence, exercise an independent review and independent judgment so don't have a feeling one way or another", said the Alabama Democrat. He was appointed to that post by President George W. Bush, after serving as Bush's White House staff secretary.

President Donald Trump is going down to the wire as he makes his choice on a replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. Corker took a harder line.

Furthermore, Cardin says, there are a host of other issues that Americans need to worry about should Trump get his way. He urged Democrats to support Kavanaugh so that he "could be confirmed with the ninetysomething Senate votes he deserves, rather than the fiftysomething votes he is likely to get".

Some Republican senators had favored other options.

Rodriguez, who doesn't understand English and is a legal U.S. resident, said he doesn't understand why the mob attacked him. To make matters worse, four other men chose to also attack the old man, kicking him and hurting him.

In the dissent, Kavanaugh said the mandate was "a law that is unprecedented on the federal level in American history" and called the penalty for people not buying insurance "jarring". "Given the prevalence of abortion regulations both historically and at the time, Rehnquist said he could not reach such a conclusion about abortion". Since the announcement from the White House, the opposition to his nomination has only become increasingly hostile and emotional from the left. In fact, the only member of "the Supremes" who isn't Catholic or Jewish is Justice Neil Gorsuch, who is Episcopalian. But Indiana's Joe Donnelly, North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp and West Virginia's Joe Manchin all say they won't attend. Feinstein is the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.

Trump also met with Republican Sens.

Democrats are specifically targeting two pro-choice Republicans, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. But the NRDC did emphasize that the Senate must ensure that Kavanaugh respects and enforces the nation's environmental laws. At the top of that list is abortion.

Like the other eight justices on the court, Kavanaugh has an Ivy League law degree, spending his undergraduate and law school years at Yale. In a dissenting opinion, he said the FCC had overstepped its authority because Congress has not passed a net neutrality law.

Kavanaugh's views on presidential power and abortion are expected to draw particular attention in his confirmation hearing. That view has particular relevance as special counsel Robert Mueller is looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign played any role in a foreign interference plot. The court's ruling in her favor was based on a constitutional principle, he wrote, "as novel as it is wrong: a new right for unlawful immigrant minors in U.S. Government detention to obtain immediate abortion on demand".

Judicial Crisis Network Chief Counsel Carrie Severino on support of Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh is Trump's second nominee, giving the president a chance to solidify conservative control of the court for years to come.
