Roger Federer races through Wimbledon opener after clinching huge kit deal

Uniqlo, which outfitted Novak Djokovic before the Serbian tennis star signed a deal with Lacoste a year ago, announced Federer as its new "Global Brand Ambassador" on Twitter.

The Swiss was in imperious form as he continued the tradition of the defending men's champion opening up Monday's play on Centre Court.

While his game is flawless to the tee, the tennis star recently recalled an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction episode during his 2007 Wimbledon win and even went on to call it his funniest moment in tennis. Uniqlo is known for its low-priced, no-frills casual clothes.

Nike sponsors Federer's long-time rival Rafael Nadal as well as leading women's players Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.

Speaking to the press post-match the 36-year-old confirmed that he does not now have a footwear deal and that he is exploring his options, of which Nike remains one. It's not about the number of grand slams played, it's about how many years I have been playing at the top level.

Nike said in a regulatory filing past year that "investments in endorsements by high-profile athletes, sports teams and leagues" helped drive sales up 6 percenrt to $34.4 billion.
