Billy Dee Williams to Reprise Role as Lando Calrissian in Episode IX

The actor, who originated the role of the suave intergalactic gambler in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, will return to the role for J.J.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Billy Dee Williams will be returning to a galaxy far, far away to reprise his role as Lando Calrissian, which will mark the actor's first appearance in the franchise since 1983's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

Rumors have been flying of Williams' return to the role since last month, when a Star Wars fan site reported that Williams was set to return. Those rumors only gained speed when Williams bowed out of an upcoming sci-fi and pop culture convention later this summer, citing a "conflict with a movie schedule".

This won't be Williams' first return to the character, post-Return of The Jedi: he's voiced Lando in a slew of Star Wars video games over the years (most recently EA's Battlefront II), as well as in two LEGO Star Wars shows and Star Wars: Rebels. Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac are all expected to return.

JJ Abrams returns to direct Star Wars: Episode IX from a script he has co-written with Batman v Superman writer Chris Terrio.

The character is one of the more popular personages in the Star Wars universe and appeared in a major way in this years Solo: A Star Wars Story.
