U.S. Navy warships sail through Taiwan Strait

"Two U.S. Navy ships conducted a routine transit through the worldwide waters of the Taiwan Strait on July 7-8", U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesman Capt. Charlie Brown told USNI News Saturday.

Word of the transit was first made public by a statement from Taiwan's Defense Ministry that said the identified the two ships by their hull numbers.

Although the USA does not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it is its most powerful ally and biggest arms supplier.

A pair of US warships passed through the Taiwan Strait this weekend, according to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense. China regularly says Taiwan is the most sensitive issue in its ties with the United States.

Against the backdrop of tense cross-strait relations and U.S. -Sino relations strained by trade issues, the U.S. Navy sailed two of its Arleigh-Burke guided missile destroyers through the strait over the weekend, which it said was a routine voyage that has been carried out for many years.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory to be conquered by force if necessary, has criticized recent US moves to strengthen relations with the administration of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

The U.S. State Department has also reportedly requested the deployment of a detachment of marines to help safeguard new facilities of the American Institute in Taiwan, Washington's de facto consulate in lieu of formal diplomatic ties, in Taipei. Taiwan has shown no interest in being governed by the ruling Communist Party in Beijing.

In recent months, China's air force has held military maneuvers near the island, which Taipei has called intimidation.

A former Japanese colony, Taiwan split from China amid civil war in 1949 and China cut off relations with Tsai's government after her 2016 inauguration because she refuses to recognize the island as a part of China.
