Haiti government suspends fuel price hike

Just before the suspension was announced, the leader of Haiti's lower house of parliament had threatened a government takeover if the fuel price increases were not reversed.

Journalists saw young men stripping shelves bare in some supermarkets that were charred by the protests.

The renewed violence follows two days of paralysis in the city, sparked Friday by a Government announcement that gasoline prices would rise by 38 per cent, diesel by 47 per cent, and kerosene by 51 per cent starting on the weekend.

Originally, Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant said he needed to increase the cost to balance his budget. But the rioting continued.

Many Haitians are now demanding the immediate departure of President Jovenel Moise. It urged US citizens "do not travel to the airport unless your confirmed flight is departing".

Some flights from Haiti resumed Sunday after protests over a proposed increase in fuel prices ordered by the government caused airlines to stop service to and from the island. "Canadians stand with the people of Haiti during this hard time and we offer our deepest condolences to the victims of the violence". "Flights are cancelled today and the airport has limited food and water available".

U.S. carriers American Airlines, JetBlue and Spirit Airlines announced flight cancellations Saturday to the capital Port-au-Prince citing civil unrest.

Dozens of people were left stranded at Port-au-Prince airport, unable to return to their accommodation due to the streets being blocked and a lack of alternative transportation.

The group of Americans include volunteer groups who are visiting on behalf of churches from South Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Alabama.

Jody Flowers - the lead minister from Chapin United Methodist Church, in SC - told CNN Sunday that 13 members of his church were supposed to leave Haiti on Saturday but their departure date was now uncertain.

Opposition groups said they expected more protests throughout the country on Saturday.

A member of Flowers' church earlier told an NBC affiliate that 160 people from American churches were waiting out the protests at MOH's office in Titanyen, about 30 miles north of Port au Prince.

At least three people have been killed, including two protesters who were fatally shot by authorities and a security guard who was beaten to death by demonstrators after attempting to disperse a crowd by firing his gun into the air.
