Erdogan assumes greater powers as Turkey's new era begins

Erdogan is scheduled to take the oath of office at the Grand National Assembly in Ankara at 4:30 pm (1330 GMT), as Turkey completes its transition from a parliamentary model to an all-powerful presidency.

Later on Monday at 9.30 p.m. (GMT1830), Erdogan is also due to announce the ministers of the new Cabinet under Turkey's presidential system.

Turkey is expected to adopt an increasingly nationalistic line in its foreign policy with the conservative and Islamic-leaning AKP and the nationalist MHP in parliament.

Erdogan, who first came to power as premier in 2003, won an outright victory in June 24 polls, defeating his closest rival, Muharrem Ince of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) which is now locked in internal battles over its future direction.

After winning 52.9 percent of the vote in Turkey's presidential election two weeks ago, Erdogan was granted the ability to call additional elections, appoint judges without parliamentary approval, dissolve Parliament, and issue decrees that had previously been reserved for states of emergency. The introduction of the new presidential system marks the biggest overhaul of governance since the Turkish republic was established on the ruins of the Ottoman Empire almost a century ago.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports President Erdogan emerged victor of the June 25 Turkish presidential election with 52.5 per cent of the total votes cast during the exercise.

In a telephone conversation with President Erdogan Friday evening, President Buhari expressed the hope that the results of the recently held elections will strengthen democracy and lead Turkey towards more economic prosperity.

Its commentator Asli Aydintasbas wrote: "I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that we entered a "second republic" era", after the republic set up by Turkey's secular founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Newly elected lawmakers were sworn in at parliament on Saturday.

His inauguration at the 1,150-room presidential palace will be attended by 22 presidents and 28 prime ministers and parliament speakers, among others, state News Agency, Anadolu, reported. His entry to the presidential complex will be greeted with a 101-gun salute. Some of these coins will also be placed on the market.

Attending heads of state include the presidents of Pakistan, Somali, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Venezuela, Zambia, Moldova, and the Emir of Qatar.
