Sydney Airport in first stages of facial recognition trial

This biometric check-in procedure is now under a trial phase with selected Qantas passengers and will use four "key steps" for passenger's automated check-in, according to a statement from Sydney Airport.

It will also use "face on the move technology" in the arrivals hall as part of the trial to capture a passenger's image and update their biometric token on return to Australia.

"Qantas customers will not only be able to check in for their flight using the technology, it is also available for our lounge staff who can create a more personalised experience when passengers arrive", Hudson said. Qantas, an Austrailia based airline with world's largest fleet, has partnered with Sydney Airport for the trial of this biometric tech, with passengers on selected global flights taking part.

Qantas and Sydney Airport have commenced trials of facial recognition technology for passengers departing on global flights.

Consenting Qantas passengers on select worldwide flights will be the first to participate in the trial.

The contract would "deliver upgraded biometric technology, enabling the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to use biometric data to clear passengers arriving at Australian global airports", according to a statement from Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Peter Dutton dated July 27 2017.

The first stage of a pilot to test "couch to gate" biometrics at Sydney Airport has gone live.

"We've worked with Qantas from the outset and are delighted to be partnering with them as we trial this technology".

The airport has been developing the new facial recognition technology since early 2017 as part of a broader passenger management system.

"Your face will be your passport and your boarding pass at every step of the process", said CEO Sydney Airport Geoff Culbert.

The PDE is based on the International Air Transport Association's One Identity concept.

These include the New Experience in Travel and Technologies (NEXTT) project looking at how the industry and government can work together to take advantage of new and emerging technologies to make airport processes smoother, faster and cheaper.
