Mike Pompeo heading to North Korea for nuclear talks

President Donald Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, said Sunday that Pompeo and North Korean officials will discuss a US plan that would lead to the dismantling of the North's nuclear and missile programs in a year.

"We have developed a program ... about really how to dismantle all of their WMD and ballistic missile programs in a year", Bolton said. You haven't seen nuclear - you haven't seen the nuclear detonations.

The Washington Post reported on Saturday that USA intelligence officials had concluded that North Korea did not intend to fully give up its nuclear arsenal and is considering ways to hide the number of weapons it has. But the administration has framed it as a goodwill gesture to keep negotiations going, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo telling ABC News the day after the summit that it was about "setting the right conditions for moving forward with" talks.

Nauert said there will be no surprises in terms of what the USA is asking North Korea to do. He said that would include transparency by North Koreans about the nuclear material they have, the engineering of it and the missiles that would deliver those nuclear weapons as well as other weapons of mass destruction.

Mr Trump, who tweeted after his summit with Kim that Americans could "sleep well tonight" because he has reduced the threat, said he believes Pyongyang will keep its word to disarm. He told VOA that North Korea appears to be finishing a factory that is known for making parts for solid-fuel missiles.

Defense Secretary James Mattis told reporters one week after the Singapore summit that while he had not seen any indications that North Korea had dismantled its nuclear program, he "wouldn't expect that at this point" because "detailed negotiations" had not begun.

Bolton's remarks contradicted those of Pompeo, the point man on the talks and who had earlier said that the USA wants North Korea to take "major" nuclear disarmament steps within the next two years - before the end of Trump's first term in January 2021.

The top United States diplomat's visit comes amid growing doubts about Pyongyang's willingness to abandon its nuclear arsenal.

Pompeo and Kim are expected to discuss concrete and credible measures to rid Pyongyang of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

"We are proud that sports are taking the initiative in opening the road for. peace", the North's Vice sports minister Won Kil U said as he greeted the delegation at Pyongyang's Sunan airport.

Pompeo must remember that North Korea wants to shift the focus of the discussion away from its weapons programs and toward highlighting North Korea's improving relations with the outside world.

However, some experts disputed Bolton's optimistic time frame for decommissioning North Korea's weapons, even if North Korea were willing to agree to such moves, amid multiple reports suggesting otherwise.

Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reported that North Korea is rapidly completing a major expansion of a key manufacturing facility for missiles - missiles that can strike American allies, American military bases in those allied countries and, yes, the mainland United States. This would put South Korea's security and its alliance with the United States "at a crossroads between life and death", said Kim Taewoo, a former president of the Korea Institute of National Unification.
