'I'm walking!' Four-year-old girl with cerebral palsy takes first steps

"I'm walking!" Maya Tisdale, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age 2, said after her first steps.

Doctors performed selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) surgery, a neurosurgical procedure that selectively destroys problematic nerve roots in the spinal cord.

"I'm walking!" Maya says, smiling and laughing before adding: "Yes!" "I'm walking! Yes! I even took a big step".

Maya's mother, Ann Tisdale, posted a video of the milestone to social media on Sunday.

Her family raised funds for the March 27 surgery, which took place at St. Louis Children's Hospital, with T-shirts and crowdfunding sites, and have kept supporters updated on her progress on their Facebook page.

Maya Tisdale from MI was born 4 months early and weighed 1 pound and 10 ounces.

Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was later transferred to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The boys, he added, "cannot dive at this time" and are not ready to make the nearly six-hour journey out of the cave.

These prefectures include those in the Kansai region, including Osaka, which is still reeling from a powerful quake that hit the area in June.

Maya was born several months early and weighed 1 lb., 10 oz.

This specific type of cerebral palsy caused "the muscles in her hips, legs and feet to be tight or spastic" and left her "unable to stand on her own for more than a few seconds, or walk without the use of walker", the family's website said. I can't even put into words how we are feeling.

Maya's family stated that the procedure would reduce Maya's spasticity permanently and give Maya to live without much pain.

Maya previously walked with support.

The now-viral clip shows Maya sitting on a small bench and teetering for her first two steps before plopping back down on the seat.

Seven weeks after her surgery, Maya took a few steps on her own which left her parents stunned. "She's going to continue with physical therapy five days a week, just like we've been doing, and get stronger and practice her skill of walking", she said.
