Suspected rhino poachers killed by lions at South African reserve

Earlier, we'd enjoyed a similarly close sighting of two young rhino who, munching away and breathing easily, seemed entirely unfazed by our presence - a confidence perhaps attributable to the round-the-clock efforts of anti-poaching patrols.

Suspected rhino poachers are believed to have been killed by a pride of lions after human remains were found Tuesday at a South African game reserve. Authorities believe the men entered the game reserve in the early hours of Monday; they were found dismembered the following day, the news agency reports.

Body parts of lions are also used in traditional medicine.

In 2016, three rhinos were killed when poachers sneaked into the park, shooting them and cutting off their horns.

"The comments on our Facebook are all talking about karma and warnings", Fox said, via The Telegraph while stating that his wildlife park remains open as the investigation continues. Reserve staff did however find high-powered rifles with silencers, wire cutters and an axe.

According to UK-based conservation charity Save the Rhino International, 7,245 rhinoceros died in South Africa due to poaching between 2007 and 2017. "Numbers have gone from fewer than 10 in 2007 to well over 1,000 in the past few years", she said. More cameras were installed to monitor the rhinos.

The reserve's anti-poaching team arrived on the scene after a field guide alerted them to the human remains. The Washington Post was unable to reach Fox for comment.

According to Ellis, poachers are members of well-organized criminal networks driven by a demand from the Asian market.

"It is huge relief that they did not get to the rhino", Fox told Herald Live.

"It's not a crime of poverty", she said.
