Instead, a panel of three judges backed the FBI-led case, which began with a raid on Dotcom's Auckland mansion in January 2012 and has dragged on for more than six years. He changed his last name to Dotcom in 2012.

"The precedent set is concerning and has ramifications in New Zealand outside my case", he said.

Mr Dotcom estimates he has spent 165 days in court and spent $40 million in legal fees on the case.
