US Ambassador to Estonia Resigns Over Trump Comments

The U.S. ambassador to Estonia, James Melville, is quitting the diplomatic service after 33 years, over comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In her letter of resignation to then Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, she said she was quitting because the U.S. had abandoned human rights as a priority, Foreign Policy reported.

The resignation comes ahead of a pivotal North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, where the United States' closest historic allies fear that Trump will lambast them and further isolate Washington from its allies after heated disputes over trade, defense spending issues, and the USA exit from the Iran nuclear deal.

"I leave willingly and with deep gratitude for being able to serve my nation with integrity for many years, and with great confidence that America, which is and has always been, great, will someday return to being right", Melville added.

"For the president to say the European Union was "set up to take advantage of the United States, to attack our piggy bank, ' or that 'NATO is as bad as NAFTA" is not only factually wrong, but proves to me that it's time to go", Melville wrote. He is among many senior State Department officials who have headed for the exits or been pushed toward them since Trump assumed office, CNN said. "European relations is another example of someone who spent decades building the relations between Europe and the US not being able to bear the speed at which Trump is thrashing cooperation in the democratic world", Paet told the Baltic News Service on Saturday.

Another Estonian ex-foreign minister, Marina Kaljurand, told state broadcaster ERR that Melville's planned departure had been known for a year but he chose to resign a little earlier than planned.
